site.btaBulgaria’s Gross External Debt Up 18.6% Y/Y, Reaching EUR 53.0 Bln at End-June - Central Bank
Bulgaria’s gross external debt stood at EUR 53,030 million at the end of June 2025, equal to 47.2% of the projected gross domestic product (GDP), according to preliminary data released Friday by the Bulgarian National Bank. Compared to end-June 2024, the debt increased by EUR 8,330 million, or 18.6%.
The data show that at end-June, short-term liabilities amounted to EUR 10,535.9 million (19.9% of the gross debt, 9.4% of GDP), rising by EUR 1,865.2 million (21.5%) from June 2024 (EUR 8,670.7 million, 19.4% of debt, 8.4% of GDP).
Long-term liabilities totaled EUR 42,494.1 million (80.1% of the gross debt, 37.8% of GDP) at end-June, an increase of EUR 6,464.8 million (17.9%) year-on-year (EUR 36,029.3 million, 80.6% of debt, 34.7% of GDP).
At end-June, EUR 33,698.3 million, or 63.5% of gross external liabilities, had a remaining maturity of over one year. The currency composition shows that 80.1% of gross external liabilities were denominated in euro, compared to 80% a year earlier.
The general government’s gross external debt reached EUR 15,460 million (13.8% of GDP) at end-June. Compared to end-June 2024 (EUR 10,280 million, 9.9% of GDP), this marks an increase of EUR 5,180 million (50.4%). Government debt accounted for the largest share in the external debt structure—29.2% at end-June 2025, up from 23% a year earlier.
The central bank’s external liabilities amounted to EUR 1,917.1 million (1.7% of GDP), a decrease of EUR 93.7 million (−4.7%) compared to end-June 2024 (EUR 2,010.8 million, 1.9% of GDP).
External liabilities of other monetary financial institutions (banks and money market funds) stood at EUR 9,481.7 million (8.4% of GDP), rising by EUR 2,439.2 million (34.6%) from end-June 2024 (EUR 7,042.5 million, 6.8% of GDP).
The external liabilities of other sectors were EUR 13,442.1 million (12% of GDP), up EUR 838.7 million (6.7%) year-on-year (EUR 12,603.4 million, 12.2% of GDP).
Intercompany lending amounted to EUR 12,729.1 million (11.3% of GDP) at end-June, down by EUR 34.2 million (−0.3%) compared to end-June 2024 (EUR 12,763.3 million, 12.3% of GDP).
