“Our goal is to protect the interests of Bulgarian citizens from possible problems with fuel supplies,” GERB-UDF Deputy Floor Leader Kostadin Angelov told reporters on Tuesday in response to a question about the GERB-UDF position following the adoption of the bill expanding the powers of the special administrator for Lukoil.
Angelov said that the aim of the bill is to meet the November 21 deadline. “Instead of understanding, we receive only criticism and no solutions from the opposition. We have the feeling that the opposition is not defending Bulgaria’s interest but that of the Kremlin. At this point, the ball is in the President’s court. If he cares about Bulgaria, he should return the bill and issue a decree for its promulgation as quickly as possible. If he decides to impose a veto, this would mean he is not defending the interest of Bulgarian citizens but some corporate interests that will likely become clear later,” Angelov argued.
“Even if such a veto is imposed, it will be overridden within hours. We have no other choice, November 21 is the latest possible date. By then, we must have guaranteed Bulgaria’s national security, and we will meet this challenge,” he added.
