The 120th anniversary of the birth of world-famous Nobel Prize-winning writer Elias Canetti was marked on Tuesday with a ceremony and a film screening in Ruse, where Canetti was born, Detelina Kamenova from the Elias Canetti International Society (ECIS) in Ruse said.
The event began with a flower laying ceremony in front of the monument to Canetti in the square of the same name and a speech, delivered by ECIS Chair Prof. Penka Angelova. In the evening, the film Elias Canetti. The Vienna Years will be screened at the Canetti House.
On the occasion of the writer's 120th anniversary, a documentary exhibition dedicated to his life, work and cultural heritage has been arranged in the Ruse Library. Historian Dr. Vesselina Antonova said that Ruse preserves the memory of the only Nobel laureate born in Bulgaria, recalling that even today the three family houses and the Canetti House remain standing in the Danube city, although some are already in poor condition.
The event is organized by the Elias Canetti International Society together with Ruse Municipality and the Austrian Library, which bears the writer's name.
