The parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Religion approved on second reading a bill amending and supplementing the Protection against Discrimination Act here on Friday that had been tabled by the Council of Ministers. The amendments are related to two European directives that establish common minimum standards for the independence, powers, resources, and effectiveness of equality bodies in Member States.

The goal is to guarantee the bodies' independence and ensure sufficient resources for the performance of their duties.

The directives must be transposed into national law by June 19, 2026. There were no comments on the bill during the second reading.
