A protest took place outside the Palace of Justice in Sofia on Wednesday, calling for the resignation of acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov. The event was organized by the Justice for All initiative. Police presence in the area was heightened and traffic was restricted.
The organizers say that Sarafov is a political appointee of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms who "unquestioningly runs political errands." They claim he keeps the prosecution service in an "iron grip," exercising sole control over its work and deciding which cases are pursued.
Until Sarafov leaves his office, the protests will continue, lawyer Velislav Velichkov from Justice for All told reporters. "We will notify the European Public Prosecutor's Office about violations of the rule of law," he added. "Tomorrow is the last chance for the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) to correct its mistake," Velichkov said.
Later in the evening, the protesters set off on a march to the SJC building, where the protest ended.
The SJC Plenum is scheduled to meet on Thursday, and the single item on the agenda is the appointment of a new acting prosecutor general.
