An exhibition of watercolour paintings by Vassil Valev, Milko Bozhkov, Svilen Blazhev, and Stanislav Pamukchiev opens on Thursday at Sofia’s Arte Gallery. Titled “Steps in Time: Generations”, the exhibition will be on display until June 4, the gallery said.
Art historian Anelia Nikolaeva says that the exhibition aims to highlight the continuity between generations in Bulgarian art and the ways in which traditions are kept alive. “This is where a teacher and three of his students at the art high school in Sofia from the 1960s come together. Today, their names need no introduction. Milko Bozhkov, Stanislav Pamukchiev and Svilen Blazhev have long been recognized for the scale of their creative presence. Vassil Valev (1934–2021), a long-time professor at the National Academy of Art, played a major role in the development of Bulgarian watercolor painting in the second half of the 20th century,” Nikolaeva adds. One of the most notable results of his efforts was the creation of major watercolor art forums in Targovishte (Northeastern Bulgaria), the International Plein Air and national watercolor exhibitions, she says.
