An exhibition titled “Buildings on Horizon: Bulgarian Footprints in Abu Dhabi’s Modern Architecture” will open on September 26, at the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Center in Gabrovo, said Valentina Mircheva, head of the Bulgarian School Kambana in Abu Dhabi, who is also the initiator and project manager of the event.
The exhibition highlights the contribution of Bulgarian architects and engineers to the construction of key public buildings in Abu Dhabi during the 1970s and 1980s, a formative period for the city’s development as a modern capital.
“The exhibition explores the intersection between modernism and the socio-architectural context of the region, focusing on the architectural practices of Bulgarian professionals who worked on iconic projects, now recognized as part of Abu Dhabi’s modern heritage,” Mircheva explained. “Through archival documents, photographs, visual narratives, and interviews, the public will have the opportunity to follow the processes of cultural transfer and East-West dialogue,” she added.
The official opening is scheduled for 7 pm, preceded by two panel discussions: “Preserving Modern Architectural Heritage” at 5 pm and “Contemporary Models for Exhibiting Modern Architectural Heritage” at 6 pm.
The exhibition will remain open to visitors until October 12, 2025. During this period, several architecture workshops for children will be held, with dates and times to be announced at a later stage.
The project is being implemented with primary financial support from the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science under its national programme “Untold Stories of Bulgarians.”
