Representatives of the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy met in Montevideo with Bulgarian Ambassador to Argentina and Uruguay Stoyan Mihaylov and Bulgarian Honorary Consul in Uruguay Igor Svetogorsky, the higher education institution said on Wednesday.
The talks were held on January 25 and focused primarily on cooperation with the Uruguayan Navy to provide support to the Bulgarian research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (RSV 421) during its Antarctic expeditions. The possibility of RSV 421 paying a visit to Montevideo during the next polar campaign was also discussed. Svetogorsky committed to providing full support for the implementation of such an initiative, the Naval Academy noted.
Flotilla Admiral Boyan Mednikarov and Capt. Prof. Miroslav Tsvetkov are currently in Uruguay. The meeting with Mihaylov and Svetogorsky took place at the Honorary Consul’s residence in Montevideo, the Academy added.
The delegation from the Varna-based academy presented to Svetogorsky the organisation of the educational process at the Naval Academy, as well as current challenges in organising cooperation with institutions from Latin American countries. Svetogorsky expressed readiness to provide full support for establishing contacts with the Uruguayan Naval Academy in the fields of naval education and training of personnel for the merchant fleet, the statement said.
RSV 421 departed Varna for the Ice Continent on November 7 and reached the shores of Livingston Island, in the area of the Bulgarian Antarctic base, on December 26, 2025.
The fourth and second-to-last group of the 34th Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition departed from Sofia Vasil Levski Airport on January 24. The group includes expedition leader Prof. Christo Pimpirev, Prof. Stoyan Georgiev of the Geological Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), Chief Assistant Prof. Snezhina Rusinova-Videva of the BAS Institute of Microbiology, Kiril Kandilarov, writer Vasil Popov, Bulgarian News Agency special correspondent Simona-Alex Mihaleva, and journalist Jivko Konstantinov.
