Two world-class concerts this week will bring celebrated classical performers to one of Bulgaria’s most extraordinary cultural landmarks — the Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis, a restored Roman-era monument  — as part of the Balabanov’s House Music Days International Festival in Plovdiv, the basilica museum announced on social media.

On Tuesday, November 11, audiences will witness the first-ever joint performance of Albena Danailova, concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and acclaimed pianist Ludmil Angelov. The following evening, November 12, Angelina Abadzhieva (violin) and Borislava Taneva (piano) will present “Knights of the Avant-Garde in the Pantheon of the 20th Century,” featuring works by Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, and Schnittke.

The autumn edition of the Balabanov’s House Music Days International Festival opened on September 17 with a concert featuring mezzo-soprano Svetlina Stoyanova, the Pilekadone Quintet, and a jazz trio led by pianist Konstantin Kostov. The program has since included violinist Svetlin Rusev with a performance of Paganini’s 24 Caprices for Solo Violin, actor Valentin Ganev and pianist Victoria Vassilenko in Richard Strauss’s “Enoch Arden”, as well as recitals by tenor Mario Nikolov, soprano Valentina Korchakova, and pianist Georgius Filadelphis. October highlights also featured the Solem Quartet from Switzerland and a thematic concert tracing Kurt Weill’s musical journey from Berlin to Broadway, performed by mezzo-soprano Kerstin Tuernaim and pianist Katya Borisova.
