Partial local elections were held in Romania on Sunday. According to the first exit polls, in the lead is Ciprian Ciucu, the candidate of the National Liberal Party and current Mayor of District 6, local media report. According to data from CURS-Avangarde, cited by Digi24, he received 32.7% of the vote.

In second place is the candidate of the Social Democratic Party and current Mayor of District 4, Daniel Baluta, with 26.3%, followed by independent candidate Anca Alexandrescu with 20.2% and the candidate of the Save Romania Union, Catalin Drula.

"Unity in the ruling coalition. We will have a lot of work to do for the municipality. I want to make Bucharest the project of my life," were Ciucu's first words after the polls closed. Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan was also present at the National Liberal Party headquarters.

"Dear Bucharest residents, thank you. I will be the mayor of all of you, the person who will always be in the community and listen to you. I will work hard, day after day, to put Bucharest in order. You have given me a difficult mission, and I will fulfill it. This will be my life's work for the next ten years. I will stay with you and with Bucharest. Time will be on our side! I await the official result," Ciucu wrote on Facebook.

His main opponent Daniel Baluta was quick to respond: "The result is inconclusive until the counting process is complete. I ask my colleagues in the electoral district to be very careful, and I urge those who have impure thoughts to forget them."

Bucharest voted for a new mayor, as Nicusor Dan, who was elected for a second term as mayor on June 9, 2024, was elected President of Romania in May 2025. Election day began at 7:00 a.m. and ended at 9:00 p.m. The polling stations closed with a voter turnout of 32.71%, according to data from the Permanent Electoral Authority. A total of 589,918 residents of Bucharest out of the 1,803,728 people on the permanent voter list exercised their right to vote. Voter turnout was highest in Ciucu's District 6, at 37.11%.
