Frenchman Gilles Fuchs, Founder of the Varna International Ballet Competition Foundation, has sent a letter requesting intervention to protect the competition. His appeal is addressed to Bulgaria's President, Vice President, Minister of Culture, the Varna Regional Governor, and the Mayor of Varna.
"Today I am deeply surprised and alarmed to learn that Varna Municipality, through the Director of the Culture and Spiritual Values Directorate, has taken action to register a trademark imitating that of the competition, with the intention of creating another event under the same name. This initiative is inexplicable, unjustified and extremely harmful. It threatens not only the artistic integrity of the competition, but also the international cultural image of the city of Varna. I believe that this is a grave mistake, capable of having devastating consequences for the prestige of Varna and for Bulgaria," Fuchs stressed in his letter.
He emphasized that the prestige of the Varna Ballet Competition, established in 1964, is undisputed and remains the first in the world, overshadowing all those that came after it, and represents an indispensable step for every ambitious dancer. Fuchs stressed that it is unacceptable for the significant legacy of the event to be threatened by an administrative initiative without cultural and historical justification.
