Specialized teams from the Bulgarian Navy have been deployed to assist the population following the floods in Burgas region, the Defence Ministry announced.

Following requests from the regional governor of Burgas and subsequent approval from the Chief of Defence, a modular unit from the Naval Base in Burgas has been placed on standby to operate in the area of the Veleka River near the village of Sinemorets. The mission of the military personnel is to break through the sandbar, if necessary, to ensure the free flow of river water into the sea.

Navy specialists have also joined a crisis response team operating in the area of the town of Sveti Vlas, according to the Ministry.

Diving teams from the naval bases in Varna Burgas are providing assistance and support with the evacuation of people in the area of the Elenite resort village, located in Nesebar Municipality.

According to the Burgas Regional Administration, there will be no need to detonate the sandbar at the mouth of the Veleka River, as the water has begun draining naturally.

Earlier on Friday, the regional administration submitted a request to Atia Naval Base to mobilize resources, including boats and divers, to support operations in managing the situation at the resort village of Elenite.
