The film Nina Roza, a co-production with Bulgarian participation, has won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale). The awards ceremony took place on Saturday evening and was streamed on the festival’s YouTube channel.
The awards were announced by Berlinale's international jury, chaired by German director Wim Wenders.
The film’s director and screenwriter, Canadian filmmaker Genevieve Dulude-De Celles, received the statuette. Nina Roza is a co-production of Canada, Italy, Bulgaria, and Belgium. Bulgaria is represented in the project by co-producer Lubomira Piperova (Ginger Light). The lead role is played by Galin Stoev, with performances by Michelle Tzontchev, Sofia Stanina and Ekaterina Stanina, Svetlana Yancheva, among others.
Nina Roza explores the meeting of past and present through the story of a family divided between Bulgaria and Canada. Screen Daily described the film as a poetic reflection on art, exile, parenthood, and legacy.
The Golden Bear for Best Film at this year's festival was awarded to the political drama Yellow Letters by German director Ilker Catak. For the first time in more than 20 years, a film by a German director won the festival’s top prize, dpa noted.
The festival opened on February 12, with actress Michelle Yeoh receiving the honourary Golden Bear at the ceremony.
