Reading out a declaration on behalf of the Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) parliamentary group during the National Assembly’s sitting on Wednesday, CC-DB Co-Floor Leader Nadejda Iordanova said that adopting the euro does not mark the end of the fight for a European Bulgaria. To truly be a European country, Bulgaria must become a rule-of-law state, she emphasized. Iordanova underscored that the fight for the rule of law, for independent judicial and regulatory bodies, continues.

“This remains a major battle for the democratic community and its political representatives. We have never abandoned it, and we will not abandon it now. The eurozone is not a cure for the serious institutional deficits of Bulgarian statehood. The euro provides us with an additional path for free development – one that can lead us to the greater success of living in a true rule-of-law state,” she said.

At the beginning of the declaration, it is noted that with euro adoption, Bulgarians are now “adult Europeans”. The text recalls that Bulgaria joined the EU 18 years ago and, as of January 1, 2026, will also join the eurozone, completing its path of European integration.

“Generations of Bulgarians lived with the hope and belief that they – or at least their children – would one day be real Europeans. Now, we will stand equal with the other peoples of Europe, thanks to our own collective efforts, just as was envisioned in the legacy of Vasil Levski. Today is a celebration for the entire democratic community, which has been at the forefront of this civilizational aspiration,” Iordanova said.

“Many parties and governments over the years have contributed to achieving this national goal – membership in the eurozone. The path was winding and slow, but now is not the time to divide credit or blame, because this is a success for the nation as a whole, and the real winners are the pro-European Bulgarian citizens,” she continued.

According to Iordanova, by joining the eurozone, Bulgaria becomes part of the EU core. “This is an anchor of stability in turbulent geopolitical times. It offers us greater protection and new prospects for development in transforming markets. It gives us a chance for more investment and growth, and to reach average European levels of prosperity more quickly,” she added.

“I call on the government – abandon your plans to use anti-market measures to curb price growth. Such actions could lead to higher prices, and the public will blame the euro for it,” Iordanova warned in conclusion.
