“Welcome to the Euro, Bulgaria!” reads a nearly 30-metre-long banner displayed on the Charlemagne building of the European Commission in Brussels, ahead of Tuesday’s final decisions on the country’s adoption of the common European currency from January 1, 2026.

On Tuesday, July 8, 2025, the EU Economic and Financial Affairs Council is expected to vote on three decisions regarding Bulgaria, immediately following the expected approval of the European Parliament’s report in Strasbourg confirming the country’s readiness to join the euro area. A ceremony in Brussels is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon to officially announce Bulgaria as the 21st member of the Eurogroup.

The Charlemagne building was the first of the European Union institutions' buildings constructed in Brussels, completed in 1967. It initially housed the Council of the EU and the European Council, and later the offices of the European Commission. It is adjacent to the Commission’s headquarters, the Berlaymont building, which was completed in 1969.
