Bulgaria and the USA will deepen their cooperation in the field of higher education and media literacy. The 120th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries will also be celebrated with various initiatives. This transpired during a meeting between Minister of Education and Science Prof. Galin Tsokov and US Ambassador to Bulgaria Kenneth Merten, the ministry said on Tuesday.

"It is very important for us both to exchange experience and to get support for the various changes that will take place in Bulgarian education in the coming years," Minister Tsokov said. He pointed out that in recent years there have been serious exchanges with various educational institutions in the USA, and American teachers have been teaching English in Bulgarian schools. Minister Tsokov also stressed the importance of cooperation in higher education and in particular the Fulbright programme, which provides scholarships for Bulgarian masters and PhD students at American universities.

Ambassador Merten also pointed out that the Fulbright Commission is one of the best lines of cooperation between the two countries over time. In his words, the cooperation under this programme is paying off and will bring many advantages to both Bulgaria and the USA.

Minister Tsokov and Ambassador Merten also discussed the cooperation in the field of media literacy. This includes counteracting misinformation as well as skills to distinguish fake news. A special project on media literacy in Bulgaria, funded by the US State Department, is to be implemented at a cost of USD 900,000.

The two officials also discussed joint initiatives to commemorate 120 years of diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and the USA.
