Bulgaria ranks among the top six European Union trading partners for Moldova, according to data from Moldova’s Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization. In 2024, trade between the two countries exceeded USD 267 million, marking a 14.8% increase compared to the previous year.

Sunflower seeds led Moldova’s exports to Bulgaria, reaching USD 51.4 million, an increase of over 275% from 2023. Sunflower oil exports also saw a significant rise, totalling USD 12.9 million, up 1,157% from the previous year. Other notable Moldovan exports to Bulgaria include rapeseed, gas meters, petroleum oils, and electrical cables and wires. Moldova mainly imports from Bulgaria products such as insulated glazing, electrical conductors, detergents, plastic packaging, and various food items. According to economic analysts, the ongoing growth in bilateral trade opens up new opportunities for Moldovan producers within the EU market and reaffirms the potential for a sustainable and mutually beneficial economic partnership, the Ministry said.

According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics of the Republic of Moldova as of 2014, around 54,000 ethnic Bulgarians reside in Moldova, which makes up 1.9% of the country’s population (2,804,801). The majority live in Taraclia District, with others in the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia and the districts of Cahul, Cantemir, and Leova.
