Athens Mayor Haris Doukas announced a package of social initiatives in a post on his Facebook profile on Sunday night. Those include zero fees for cleaning and street lighting for people who are about to have a baby in 2026 and earn less than EUR 30,000 a year, for energy-vulnerable households, families with three or more children, and the poor.

Doukas reported that despite the enormous economic difficulties faced by local government, Athens was among the few municipalities was able to keep municipal taxes unchanged for the second year in a row. The municipal centre for homeless people, which offers shelter, social services, and assistance in returning to independent living, is also stepping up its efforts.

Other initiatives announced by the Mayor include a platform that was set up to help student over 15 to take part in discussing and planning school, local and urban activities; having Athens back a common position of European cities for the protection of social cohesion and EU policies aimed at people and local communities; the introduction of separate collection of bio-waste at open markets.

The Greek capital will also host the Deaflympics in 2029.
