LIK’s visit to London is the magazine’s first public appearance since it was awarded the Golden Quill for its contribution to Bulgarian culture on the eve of May 24, 2025, the magazine’s managing editor, Yanitsa Hristova, said at an event hosted by the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in London on Thursday night. The event is dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the publication of the first issue of LIK, the literature, art, and culture magazine of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) and the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR).

Hristova emphasized that the work and efforts of the authors, translators, and editors who have tied their professional paths to LIK have not gone unnoticed. “Over the years, recognition has come not only from readers but also from various organizations,” she said.

Before the guests at the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in London, Hristova said that the first issue of LIK has now been digitized and can be read for free on the BTA website.

Its content spans forty black-and-white pages, featuring six sections: Literary News, On World Stages, Fine Art, Musical World, and Screen, with the final section, Mosaic, presents stories about science, archaeology, and the press. "Among the highlights of the first issue is a news story about Salvador Dali, who had just returned to the United States from a trip to Europe and had begun painting in a completely new style that created an optical illusion. The article notes that the artist “modestly” described himself as the best contemporary painter," Hristova said.

She added that in this year’s anniversary issue, Panayot Denev, BTA Director General from 1997 to 2002, recounted the magazine’s first steps.

According to Hristova, official documents accompanying the founding of LIK describe its mission as: "A special bulletin for literature, art, and culture." The magazine aimed to offer articles, stories and reports from magazines and newspapers previously unknown or inaccessible to the Bulgarian reader.”

"In 1966, the editorial team described LIK in an advertisement as a publication that provides detailed global information on events and issues in literature, theatre, visual arts, music, education, etc. The team pointed out that LIK, illustrated with photographs and reproductions, serves as a window into the diverse cultural life of the modern world. It was as an open window to the world that generations of Bulgarians remember the magazine to this day," Hristova added.
