Sandanski is introducing modern and ecological public transport, the municipal administration said on Thursday.
A local project for the development and modernization of urban transport envisages the introduction of environment-friendly vehicles and a comprehensive improvement of the transport system in the 24,000-population town. Three electric public buses have already been delivered within the framework of the project, and financing has also been provided for the purchase of two electric minibuses for social services and two electric vehicles for the needs of the municipal administration. The project aims at long-term economic development and environmental protection, the administration specified for BTA.
One of the main problems facing Sandanski is intensive traffic, which is why the project includes the development of a general traffic plan, the aim of which is to reduce traffic congestion, optimize the transport scheme and better organize traffic. The new transport scheme will comply with environmental requirements and will cover as many residents of the municipality as possible, the Municipality emphasized, adding that the price of a single ticket will be EUR 1.
The new public transport in Sandanski is expected to be put into operation from May 1, the Municipality noted.
The project is financed under the Regional Development Programme 2021–2027 and will be implemented in partnership with the municipalities of Petrich, Kresna and Strumyani. The project also intends to improve connectivity between the territories through investments in local municipal roads and sections connected to the Struma Motorway.
