The Golden Quill award affirms the value of the work being done and proves that LIK magazine can thrive today, editor-in-chief Georgi Lozanov said during the awards ceremony on Friday.

LIK magazine, published by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), was among this year’s 24 laureates.

“This award matters to us because the magazine has a long history and a legendary period. Those with white hair like mine remember that before 1989, it was a window through the information curtain—a way to glimpse Western culture and its major figures,” Lozanov said.

He added that this legacy made the magazine a significant cultural privilege. As it now enters a new phase, the real challenge is internal. “This is the toughest competition, and there is a real risk that people who remember LIK from the past may not recognize the current magazine as its successor,” Lozanov said.

LIK marked 60 years since its first issue in January. For decades, it served as a gateway to global art, and in the early 21st century, began promoting Bulgarian culture. After nearly nine years out of circulation, the magazine resumed monthly publication in March 2022 with a new design and thematic focus. Each issue spotlights a major figure or event in Bulgarian cultural and public life, drawing on BTA archive material. A contemporary perspective is ensured through contributions from diverse experts and interviewees.

The ceremony, held at the City Mark Art Center in Sofia, marked 30 years since the founding of the Golden Quill award, established by the Cantus Firmus music agency and Makta Gallery.

Each of the Golden Feather laureates shared reflections during the ceremony. Actor Marius Donkin urged people to preserve their identity, while journalist Elena Rozberg noted that in an age of machines, the award celebrates the enduring mystery of human creativity. Many, like director Viktor Chuchkov Jr. and poet Matey Stoyanov, dedicated their prizes to mentors and collaborators, while others, including artist Emil Stoychev and writer Georgi Bardarov, spoke of faith in Bulgaria’s future and pride in its cultural legacy.
