Translator Angela Rodel will present in New York the first English translation of the 20th-century Bulgarian classic, Vera Mutafchieva's The Case of Cem, the Bulgarian Consulate General in New York said on social media. The event will take place at Rizzoli Bookstore on January 29.
The plot of the book is quite simple and is focused on Prince Cem, the second son of Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror. After the Sultan's death in 1481, power passed into the hands of his son Bayazid, who became Sultan Bayazid II. Prince Cem, an erudite, educated and experienced military man, spurred on by the Spahis and his entourage, challenged this power and proposed to his brother that they share the empire. Bayezid rejected the offer and a ruthless feud ensued between the two brothers. For Cem, long years of exile began.
Angela Rodel is the winner, together with the Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov, the International Booker Prize for the English-language translation of the novel Time Shelter.
