A ceremony was held in the EU Council on Tuesday for the signing of the documents for Bulgaria's accession to the euro area as of January 1, 2026. The documents were signed by Danish Minister for Economic Affairs Stephanie Lose on behalf of the Danish Presidency of the EU Council in the presence of Bulgarian Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova, EU Commissioner for Economy and Productivity Valdis Dombrovskis, and Eurogroup President Paschal Donohoe.

Minister Lose congratulated Bulgaria and said she was honoured to be present on this historic day. This is an extraordinary achievement for the country, it took a lot of hard work, she added.

Donohoe also congratulated the government and people of Bulgaria for the tremendous work, and wished them success in preparing for the introduction of the euro - the currency of shared values.

Congratulations to Bulgaria on becoming the 21st euro area country, Commissioner Dombrovskis said. According to him, the euro area is stronger with the accession of Bulgaria and Bulgaria is stronger with the adoption of the euro. Bulgaria must continue with reforms, and maintain fiscal discipline, Dombrovskis said.

Minister Temenuzhka Petkova said that today Bulgaria achieves its strategic goal. “This success is the result of our country's long and hard work,” she added. Petkova noted that the government with Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov has made it possible for Bulgaria to enter the euro area’s waiting room. Without this decisive step, today's success would have been impossible, she said.

The Minister thanked the European Commission, the European Central Bank, the team of the Ministry of Finance, the Bulgarian National Bank for their efforts. Bulgaria, as before, will be a pillar of fiscal discipline, promised Temenuzhka Petkova.
