Outgoing Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov congratulated Cyprus on the occasion of the start of its presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU).
“I am confident that under your leadership, Europe will advance its autonomy, openness, and resilience. I look forward to strengthened dialogue and sustainable progress,” Zhelyazkov wrote on X.
As of today, Cyprus is assuming the six-month rotating presidency of the Council of the EU for the second time under the motto 'An Autonomous Union, Open to the World.' Cyprus first held the EU Council presidency in 2012, eight years after joining the EU. Four years later, the country joined the euro area. Cyprus is one of the few European countries outside NATO and the Schengen Area.
