The Varna District Prosecution Office is leading a pre-trial investigation into the incident that occurred during the final round of the Aladzha Monastery hill climb car race, in which one person died and several others were injured, the prosecution service in the coastal city said on Sunday.
The case is being investigated under Article 123 of the Criminal Code, as it involves a sporting event considered an activity that poses an increased risk and is subject to specific regulatory requirements, the prosecution said.
The investigation is being conducted by a forensic investigator from the Varna District Investigation Department. A forensic examination of the scene is to be carried out.
The incident occurred at around 11:10 a.m. The driver was not injured and voluntarily provided a blood sample to determine whether he had consumed alcohol or drugs before getting behind the wheel of his sports car.
Work to clarify the causes and circumstances of the accident is ongoing under the supervision of a district prosecutor.
The most seriously injured victim, a woman, has been hospitalized in intensive care and is in critical condition.
