Following Bulgaria’s full accession to Schengen, Kulata–Promachonas is no longer a division line but an opportunity to increase exchange, said Greek Deputy Minister for Migration and Asylum Sevi Voloudaki during her visit to the border crossing on Monday. Speaking to journalists, Voloudaki, alongside European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner and Bulgarian Interior Minister Daniel Mitov, symbolically crossed from Bulgarian to Greek territory, marking the occasion of free movement without border checks within Schengen.

Sevi Voloudaki pointed out that Kulata–Promachonas is an extremely busy and active checkpoint. In her view, Bulgaria’s Schengen accession has made cross-border exchange between Greece and Bulgaria through this crossing significantly easier.

The full membership of both Bulgaria and Romania offers an opportunity for stronger bilateral relations and improved exchanges in tourism and transport, the Greek Deputy Minister noted.

Voloudaki also said that this development will allow for more effective protection of the European Union’s external borders and will help dismantle networks involved in illegal migration.
