Energy storage is an essential part of the Energy Ministry's vision for the development of the energy system in Bulgaria, said Energy Minister Rumen Radev on Monday in Sofia at a round table on the importance of innovations in energy storage for the sustainable energy transition.
He pointed out that this topic is covered in the documentation regarding the country’s long-term energy strategy. The basic construction of this strategy is already a fact, but there is still more to be worked out and arranged. "There is a consensual understanding of what kind of energy we are focusing on in the long term - low-emission energy production with a strong emphasis on nuclear energy, as well as the development of energy based on renewable energy sources," Radev explained. The country's hydropower potential will also be used. The electricity transmission and distribution networks will be actively developed. In addition, the cross-border capacity of the network will also be developed, the Minister added.
He also noted that the state will also actively develop energy storage systems, an essential part of which are hydro facilities. Additionally, the capacity of the pumped storage hydroelectric power plants will be increased. Wind turbines capacity will not be limited to onshore, but it will also be developed offshore in the Black Sea region.
In terms of storage systems, Bulgaria will not limit itself to a specific technological solution. “What we want to do as a team is to enable technology-neutral solutions,” Radev said. He noted that industrial electricity consumers will be encouraged to invest in electricity storage systems.
