Three Byzantine gold coins dated to the late 5th - first half of the 6th century have been found during archaeological excavations on Cape Kaliakra, Kavarna History Museum Director Penko Georgiev told BTA.
The solidi were stricken during the reign of Eastern Roman Emperors Justinian I (527-565) and Anastasius I Dicorus (491-518), who are portrayed on the obverses. The three coins belong to a hoard built up over a long period of time and were found in a part of the settlement that was inhabited by well-to-do residents.
Georgiev said that this year's archaeological excavations on Cape Kaliakra began on August 5 and are led by Assoc. Prof. Dr Boni Petrunova, Director of the National Museum of History. Kavarna Municipality has provided workers for the dig. For a second year running, a 14-member group from the St Constantine Cyril the Philosopher School for Ancient Schools and Cultures has joined the effort. "Quite a few volunteers are responding to our call, and Dobrich municipal councillors also took part in the excavations yesterday," Georgiev said.
He explained that this year's exploration is focusing on the necropolis across from the "Quarter of the Well-to-Do", but it, too, will be covered. The team will also try to localize the fifth church that served the necropolis.
More than 2,800 artefacts that make attractive exhibits have been recovered so far during the archaeological excavations on Cape Kaliakra.
