"Pirin, Rila, the Rhodopes keep history, culture, and traditions" is the message chosen by Blagoevgrad Municipality for the Rozhen Flagpole project, the regional administration of Blagoevgrad told BTA on Monday. This message, along with those of the other 27 administrative regions in Bulgaria, will be engraved on a marble slab at the base of the 111-metre flagpole to fly the Bulgarian flag above the Rozhen meadows in the Rhodopes.

The marble slap will depict a map of Bulgaria, and each message will be inscribed in the place of the respective region it comes from. The messages will thus remain for future generations.

Blagoevgrad Region’s message was chosen by a committee. The idea behind the message is to combine the richness of nature in the region with the history and traditions kept there, so that it may serve as a legacy and be kept and valued by the future generations as well, the regional administration told BTA.

The project to erect a 111-metre flagpole to fly the Bulgarian flag was launched by the Heritage in the Future Foundation. The flagpole will be erected at an altitude of 1,430 m, it will be the highest in the European Union and the flag will be visible from miles away. The initiative is backed by a national fundraising campaign mottoed "Bulgaria Deserves!" under the patronage of President Rumen Radev. The project relies entirely on donations from Bulgarians, with the cooperation of state and local authorities.
