The General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime has detained four individuals connected to the receipt of marijuana with a total gross weight of 559 kilograms, the Ministry of Interior reported on Friday. The marijuana was delivered to Bulgaria from Canada via Greece. The specialized police operation took place in the early hours of August 5 in Sofia.
Three of the men were initially arrested for 24 hours. They were attempting to remove the drugs from a container with insulation materials. European arrest warrants have been issued for them. A fourth person linked to the delivery was identified and detained a day later.
During the inspection, a total of 810 packages of marijuana were found and seized among legal goods. They were hidden in a container on the semi-trailer of a truck, part of a cargo shipment that arrived from North America at the port of Piraeus, Greece, on July 17.
The operation was conducted in close coordination with Greece’s Organized Crime Directorate and the Anti-Smuggling Department of the Third Customs Services of Piraeus. All actions were carried out under the authority of the competent judicial bodies, and case materials have been submitted to the relevant prosecution services in Greece and Bulgaria.
