Vazrazhdane leader Kostadin Kostadinov described the resignation of Kiril Petkov as Co-chair of Continue the Change (CC) and as an MP as a symptom of the corruption poisoning and tormenting the entire State, speaking on Wednesday.

Kostadinov commented on Petkov’s decision, noting that it reflects a wider malaise afflicting the Bulgarian political system.

“The fact that a leader like Kiril Petkov has resigned is simply a symptom of the disease poisoning and tormenting the entire State – it is called corruption. The same could be said about [GERB leader] Boyko Borissov, [Movement for Rights and Freedoms Chair] Delyan Peevski, and all the other political leaders, both those currently in power and representatives of some so-called opposition forces,” Kostadinov said.

"The best that could happen at this moment, especially after the turmoil in Bulgaria following what he called a very serious foreign policy defeat at the hands of the Republic of North Macedonia, is the resignation of the government and new elections," the Vazrazhdane leader believes.

At a BTA press conference earlier on Wednesday, Kiril Petkov resigned as MP and co-leader of Continue the Change, saying the party’s mission outweighs any individual. Accepting blame for missteps in selecting Sofia candidates and denying personal wrongdoing, he cited possible corruption among district mayors, voiced full confidence in Assen Vassilev and the party leadership, and questioned the authenticity of a leaked recording alleging municipal collusion.
