Pro-Lev Demonstrators Gather around Parliament Building Ahead of Publication of EC, ECB Reports

Supporters of Bulgaria's Vazrazhdane party have gathered in front of the Parliament building on Wednesday morning to defend the Bulgarian lev and call for a referendum on the adoption of the euro. Shouting "murderers" and "resignation", they have blocked traffic on one of Sofia's central boulevards.

There is strong police presence in the area. Police and gendarmerie are guarding the entrances to the building to stop protesters from blocking them.

On Wednesday afternoon, the European Commission and the European Central Bank are expected to publish reports assessing Bulgaria's readiness to join the euro area.
