Romanian swimmer David Popovici said the Balkan Athlete of the Year award was "a great honour" and expressing gratitude to his team, supporters and the organizers of the 52nd edition of the award. "To be part of this moment, which also marks 128 years of tradition of BTA makes this award even more special to me," he said in a recorded video message.

The results of BTA's Balkan Athlete of the Year poll were announced at a ceremony in BTA Monday. He won the top spot.

"I want to thank the organizers. I want especially to congratulate all of the other nominated athletes, and I want to thank my team. I want to thank those who supported me and who have, who have always supported me," the winner said.
