The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) has issued a yellow warning for heavy precipitation across the country for February 17, according to the weather alert map published on the Institute’s website on Monday.
An orange warning has been issued for the regions of Blagoevgrad, Pazardzhik, Plovdiv, Smolyan, Kardzhali, Haskovo, Yambol, Burgas, Sofia Region, Lovech, Vidin, and Montana.
A yellow warning for strong winds is also in effect for Northeastern Bulgaria, where gusts of northeasterly wind are expected to reach 17–20 metres per second.
In most parts of the country, precipitation amounts will be up to 25 litres per square metre, while in southern areas, as well as in some parts of the Fore-Balkan and the Sredna Gora region, totals are expected to range between 40 and 50 litres per square metre.
Snowfall is expected in the northwestern regions and across the higher plains of Western Bulgaria. During the night into Wednesday, as temperatures drop, rain across nearly the entire country will turn into snow, leading to the formation of a snow cover, NIMH forecasters reported.
