The government approved the report on the state of defence and the Armed Forces for 2022 Wednesday. It contains information on the results achieved in the field of defence policy in 2022 and is part of the democratic and civilian control over the Bulgarian Armed Forces. It will be submitted to the National Assembly for discussion.
The report states that in 2022 the government ensured continuity in the national objectives and priorities deriving from the Constitution, laws and strategic documents in the field of security and defence, as well as in the implementation of the commitments made within the framework of the NATO collective defence and the EU Common Security and Defence Policy.
The report also notes that the change in security environment due to Russia's war against Ukraine places increased demands on the defence capabilities of the Bulgarian Armed Forces and necessitates an acceleration of the rearmament and modernisation process.
The Defence Ministry's efforts were focused on: fulfilling the missions and tasks of the Armed Forces; building and maintaining the required defence capabilities; fulfilling NATO Capability Objectives; rearmament and modernization; developing the NATO frontline presence in the region; filling vacant positions in the Armed Forces; and manning and training the voluntary reserve.
The report also presents the main projects for the rearmament and modernization of the armed forces, the implementation of which creates the basic conditions for overcoming the deficit of critically needed capabilities.
