Outgoing Deputy Prime Minister and BSP – United Left Chair Atanas Zafirov said Monday on Facebook that the party “has a president again” and wished Vice President Iliana Iotova every success in her new role.
Iliana Iotova was first elected Vice President of Bulgaria in 2016 and was re-elected for a second term in 2021, both times on a joint ticket with Rumen Radev. She is a long-time member of the Bulgarian Socialist Party.
Zafirov also welcomed Rumen Radev to politics, saying he believes this will help return politics to its essential focus – the welfare of the people.
In a televised address to the nation Monday, Rumen Radev said that he will be submitting his resignation as head of State on Tuesday. Under Article 97 of the Constitution, the president of the Republic may tender his resignation to the Constitutional Court prior to the expiry of his term of office. In such case, the vice president must assume the office of president for the remainder of the term of office.
