Caretaker Foreign Minister Nikolay Milkov took part in a series of high-level meetings on the first day of the general debate of the 77th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the Foreign Ministry in Sofia said on Wednesday.

The Session was opened on Tuesday by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, whose address focused on the war in Ukraine, the global energy crisis, nuclear security, climate change and other global and regional problems. The opening was attended by the Bulgarian delegation, led by Milkov. The theme of this year's General Debate is "A watershed moment: transformative solutions to interlocking challenges".

Milkov took part in a meeting of the foreign ministers of the B9 countries [nine NATO members: Bulgaria, Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia], hosted by the US. The meeting focused on global threats to Euro-Atlantic security, enhancing the Alliance's deterrence posture in response to the Russian military aggression against Ukraine, deepening Trans-Atlantic dialogue and the growing challenges from China.

Milkov also held bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. He conferred with US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Karen Donfried, with whom he discussed bilateral relations and the prospects for deepening strategic dialogue between Bulgaria and the US. The two exchanged views on international and regional security issues, as well as the attraction of new US investments in key sectors of the Bulgarian economy.

Bulgaria's chief diplomat also conferred with Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu. The two expressed satisfaction with the excellent high-level dialogue as a prerequisite for tapping the potential between the two countries. Milkov and Cavusoglu agreed that closer cooperation in energy and security is needed in the current geopolitical context.

Regional cooperation, bilateral relations and the European perspective of Kosovo and the Western Balkans were discussed by Foreign Minister Milkov and his Kosovo counterpart Donika Gervalla. Milkov confirmed Bulgaria's support for Kosovo's European integration and its establishment as a democratic and multi-ethnic state, including on the international stage.

Nikolay Milkov also met with Algeria's Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra. The two discussed opportunities for deepening political dialogue and developing economic cooperation in energy and security in the context of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
