MECh Chair Radostin Vasilev told reporters in Parliament on Thursday morning that the BSP - United Left and There Is Such a People (TISP) would declare they will leave the cabinet even before the vote of no confidence, scheduled for Thursday afternoon, if they had any common sense left.
Vasilev stated that an unequivocal call for resignation was heard during the protests in many Bulgarian cities, especially in Sofia, on Wednesday night. He added: "Such a strong voice, with such a categorical desire, must be heard even by the most callous politicians—both by [GERB Chair Boyko] Borissov and [MRF - New Beginning leader Delyan] Peevski."
The leader of MECh described the protests as an unstoppable force that guarantees that the Borissov-Peevski model cannot continue and will not be repeated in Bulgaria in the medium and long term. He added: "If Peevski continues with his boundless arrogance, and Borisov does too, Bulgaria could end up in civil war. Peevski should not speculate with the ethnic card, because we can see that even those compact communities that he considers his own do not want him."
Vasilev stated that if the government gets toppled, the goal would be to form a majority that keeps Borissov and Peevski away from power, to reform the Supreme Judicial Council, to change the form of government from corrupt to democratic and to seek accountability. He warned: "We will most likely go through a series of elections after this government resigns, but this must be endured. Otherwise, we are heading for a series of protests—bigger than before, scarier, and bloodier."
The leader of MECh reported that his party supports amending the Electoral Code to remove the paper ballot in favour of machine voting that would evolve into electronic voting using the blockchain system, so that people abroad can cast their votes using their phones.
