Bulgaria’s National Assembly is set to debate a draft decision on a motion of no confidence against the Council of Ministers, led by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, over what the opposition describes as the government’s failure in economic policy that has triggered some of the largest protests in the country.
The debate on the motion, tabled by 61 MPs from Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB), Alliance for Rights and Freedoms, and Morality, Unity, Honour, is listed as the first item on the draft agenda, which is to be approved at the start of Wednesday’s plenary sitting.
The vote itself is expected to take place on Thursday, 24 hours after the end of the debates.
The motion was submitted last Friday. At the time, CC-DB announced it would call a protest on the day of the debate if the government did not resign.
CC Chair Assen Vassilev said this was the first no-confidence motion with the active participation of the country’s youngest generation, known as Generation Z, adding that the future belongs to them and must be secured. He warned that if the government does not step down, the opposition would organize an even larger protest than the one held on December 1.
The upcoming no-confidence vote over economic policy will be the sixth such motion against the current government. In mid-September 2025, the Zhelyazkov cabinet survived a fifth vote, related to alleged failures in internal order and security, justice, and what the opposition described as “captured state”.
