During a highway opening in Pozega (West Serbia), Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stressed the need for the State to identify those responsible for the canopy collapse at the Novi Sad railway station, as well as individuals who contributed to destabilizing the country afterwards, RTS reported on Wednesday.
He pointed to broader concerns in recent months, including damage to Serbia’s education system, growing institutional instability, and the misuse of university spaces. The President signaled that those involved in such developments should be held accountable.
Vucic also addressed the need for internal change within state institutions, including replacing officials who have underperformed at both national and local levels. He underlined the importance of improving the government’s relationship with citizens, including a shift toward more responsive and attentive governance.
Referencing recent investigations, Vucic noted efforts to combat corruption within and outside of official ranks, particularly in cases where individuals may have profited through illicit means.
Speaking to RTS, the President noted that thanks to the perseverance, strength, patience, and restraint of the people, Serbia has managed to defeat the social unrest and avoid the country's destruction.
In relation to the recently ended student blockade at the Student Cultural Center in Belgrade, the President referenced ongoing investigations into allegations of missing equipment during the prolonged occupation of the facility. The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office has reportedly initiated procedures for police to gather information about suspected aggravated theft.
The Novi Sad tragedy triggered a wave of public outrage across Serbia, with student-led anti-corruption protests becoming the most serious challenge of President Vucic’s political career.
