Volunteers from across Bulgaria Monday received new firefighting equipment purchased through donations from more than 1,800 people who took part in a WWF-Bulgaria fundraiser, the environmental organization announced.
Over 10 volunteer units with local municipalities were provided with backpack fire extinguishers, half-face respirator masks, and motorized blowers. The equipment was officially handed over at the General Directorate for Fire Safety and Civil Protection in Sofia, in the presence of representatives from the directorate and the volunteer groups.
According to WWF, one of the biggest risks during wildfires is asphyxiation and toxic exposure, making it essential for volunteers to have proper respiratory protection with appropriate filters. Backpack extinguishers and motor blowers are also vital for controlling forest and field fires, especially in remote or mountainous terrain where firefighting vehicles cannot reach.
"The full equipment for a single volunteer can cost around or over BGN 1,000 (EUR 500), and municipal funding is not always sufficient," the organization explained.
In Bulgaria, around 90% of municipalities have their own volunteer units. These teams assist not only during fires but also in various emergency situations. Their role is especially critical in hard-to-reach areas, where access for professional firefighting equipment is limited.
“One of our missions is to inspire more people to become volunteers and to attract supporters from all sectors: business, government, academia, and more,” said Todor Grozdanov, secretary of the National Association of Volunteers in the Republic of Bulgaria. "That’s why we recruit new volunteers every year to join our growing community."
Vladimir Ivanov, Head of Communications at WWF Bulgaria, noted that over 90% of wildfires in the country are caused by human activity. "We hope people understand that it is our collective responsibility to protect Bulgaria’s nature and our homes," he said. “Everyone can help: through donations, volunteering, or simply reporting a fire."
In July, WWF Bulgaria raised BGN 36,961 through a campaign, with the funds equally split between the National Association of Volunteers and the Wildlife Rescue Centre operated by Green Balkans.
