Projects worth nearly BGN 40 million will be implemented in order to improve the water supply in Pleven, Pleven Water Supply and Sewerage Company Manager Kliment Todorov said on Monday.
He recalled that the company submitted a working project for a section of Pleven to the Municipality in early July, adding that the project got a construction permit and after completing the mandatory procedures, work on its implementation will begin as soon as possible.
Todorov pointed out that this is not a main water supply system, but a city network with two water supply systems. One is a main water supply system, transporting water to the city, and the other is a distribution system, which supplies water to the consumers themselves. He noted that the pipes in the distribution system are made of steel and were built more than 50 years ago, which is why they have major leaks.
The large water main along this route is planned to be made of cast iron, while the others will be of polyethylene, Todorov said, adding that there will be difficulties for residents during the repair works. He emphasized however that there is no other way and that work must be done to improve the water supply in Pleven. He expressed hope that the replacement of the water pipes will begin in September.
The Pleven Water and Sewerage Company has also prepared a technical assignment for five sections in the city, where several companies can work simultaneously, with funding being secured already, Todorov said. He also reported that the water quantities from the Cherni Osam river are decreasing drastically.
Residents of Pleven staged a protest in front of Pleven City Hall on Sunday evening over the ongoing water shortage, as water supply restrictions were introduced in Pleven in early July.
