A total of 68 Romanian citizens in Iran have expressed their wish to leave the country immediately, said Foreign Minister Emil Hurezeanu, quoted by Agerpres. He further said that the Romanian embassy is communicating with another 30 individuals.
“The difficulty in providing consular protection to Romanian citizens from mixed families remains due to restrictions imposed by the Azerbaijani side on Iranian citizens. Azerbaijan does not accept persons with dual citizenship — Romanian and Iranian. Therefore, they cannot leave Iran and enter Azerbaijan. Their transfer is only possible through Turkiye. The land route to Turkiye via the Kapıkoy border crossing is being considered depending on the development of the security situation,” explained the minister.
Emil Hurezeanu also reported that at the General Consulate in Haifa, 40 individuals were prioritized: women, children, people without financial means, and medical evacuation cases. At the Romanian Embassy in Amman, 44 Romanian citizens affected by flight cancellations continue to receive support and guidance from the embassy to determine the best options for departure.
Three groups of pilgrims who were in the city of Bethlehem have left the region and entered Egyptian territory. They were later assisted by a mobile consular team from the Romanian Embassy in Cairo. The last group, consisting of 40 citizens, landed on a special flight in Sofia on Tuesday evening, and later 38 of them arrived in Romania.
Hurezeanu said that since the outbreak of the conflict on the night of June 12-13, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has activated a crisis unit operating 24 hours a day. There is also an active monitoring mechanism in place, which includes a network of embassies and consulates in the region, as well as diplomatic and consular missions in partner countries and organizations relevant to managing this crisis.
Meanwhile, government spokesperson Mihai Constantin announced that earlier on Wednesday, the government approved a memorandum led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide coordinated and effective assistance to those citizens and their families who contact emergency services for evacuation.
