Romanian MEP and leader of the far-right SOS Romania party Diana Sosoaca called on her colleagues from the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) and the Party of Young People (POT) to unite.
On the official Facebook page of her party, Sosoaca urged AUR and POT leaders George Simion and Anamaria Gavrila to bring together the “sovereignists” into a common political bloc that would take power, remove the current government, and trigger early elections.
“Romania is experiencing one of the most serious political, economic, and social crises since the fall of the communist regime. Faced with a government that has abandoned the national interest, annulled democracy, and established an administrative, fiscal, and judicial dictatorship, the sovereignist opposition has a historic responsibility: to unite and act,” local media quote Sosoaca’s letter.
Almost 24 hours later, POT responded positively, saying: “We agree with the proposal of the SOS party for the democratic opposition to begin structured coordination aimed at building a credible alternative to the current governing coalition. It is becoming increasingly clear that the government is failing to meet the expectations of the population. It appears primarily concerned with preserving its own power, while disregarding democratic norms and the principles of the rule of law.”
The party claimed that the ruling coalition has chosen “destabilization as a method of political survival.” Practices reminiscent of the former security services are being used more frequently, POT added, “these practices erode public trust, alter the political climate, deepen social polarization, and pose a direct threat to Romania’s democratic future.” In conclusion, POT stated it is looking forward to receiving concrete proposals from SOS Romania.
There has been no response from AUR so far. Local media recall that Sosoaca left the party four years ago, following multiple disputes with its leader, George Simion.
