site.btaTurkish Customs Seize Over 160 kg of Heroin at Iranian Border in Truck En Route to Bulgaria
Turkish authorities at the Gurbulak customs checkpoint on the Iranian border, near the town of Dogubayazit in Eastern Turkiye, seized 163.9 kilograms of heroin that was being smuggled through the country en route to Bulgaria.
According to state broadcaster TRT Haber, the drugs were discovered in a TIR truck, loaded with canned food products, on its way to Bulgaria.
The truck arrived at the Turkish border crossing from Iran and was subjected to inspection by teams from the Agri Provincial Gendarmerie Command, in cooperation with officers from the General Directorate of Customs Protection.
Customs documents indicated that the vehicle was carrying food supplies destined for Bulgaria via Turkiye.
During the inspection, authorities found 163.9 kilograms of heroin concealed in 1,152 plastic jars packed inside 48 boxes.
The driver of the truck, an Iranian national, has been detained on charges of drug trafficking.
