In a Facebook post on Bulgarian Municipality and Self-government Day, October 12, President Rumen Radev said that directly elected by citizens, local authorities are called upon to solve their problems on a daily basis and to always be attuned to people's concerns and hopes. "The greatest asset of any authority is trust, which is earned and maintained through integrity, responsiveness and fulfilled promises," the post reads.

Radev congratulates "all mayors, deputy mayors, municipal councillors and municipal administration employees who work honestly for the well-being of their fellow citizens and for whom the development and prosperity of Bulgarian cities and towns is a cause."

"In times of dynamic political change, local authorities often embody the State and raise citizens' expectations that they will remain the guarantor of the public interest, regardless of the self-serving appetites of the political situation," the post reads further. According to Radev, the activities of local authorities require institutional and public support and legislative changes to ensure their effectiveness and financial independence.
