The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) issued an orange code alert for heavy snowfall and blizzards on Sunday across almost the entire country, NIMH announced on its website.
The warning is for significant snowfall, with a snow cover of 10-20 cm, as well as blizzard conditions and snowdrifts. In the eastern part of the country, a strong northeasterly wind is also expected, with gusts reaching 19-24 m/s.
A yellow code for heavy snowfall has been issued for the regions of Vidin, Sofia City, Kyustendil, and Pernik.
Snowfall will begin in the southwestern parts of the country early in the morning and will spread nationwide by the evening. In most areas, precipitation will be intense and substantial. Heavy snowfall is also expected in Northeastern Bulgaria during the evening and overnight into Monday.
A snow cover will form, reaching 15-20 cm in Southern Bulgaria and 10-15 cm in the north. Winds will be moderate, and temporarily strong in Eastern Bulgaria, bringing in cold air from the northeast. Temperatures will range mostly between -3 C and 2 C, with 0-1 C in Sofia, according to NIMH.
