On Stara Zagora Day, October 5, Stefan Valdobrev and his band The Usual Suspects recorded parts of a new song at the railway station in Stara Zagora on Sunday. Earlier in the day, the musicians also recorded on the stage of the Stara Zagora State Opera and at the Beroe Stadium. Each location was chosen for its acoustics, which are being used to enrich the sound of the band’s upcoming album.
During the recording session, the musicians were visited by Bulgarian News Agency Director General Kiril Valchev, who attended the celebrations marking Stara Zagora Day. "Today we commemorate the day the city began its recovery after being burned down by the Ottomans in 1877. On October 5, 1879, the first stone was laid for the reconstruction of the city," Valchev recalled.
Stefan Valdobrev, who was born in Stara Zagora, noted that this is why the symbol of his favourite football club Beroe is the phoenix - "both the club and the city rose again like a phoenix from the ashes."
When asked what sounds he hears in his hometown, the musician said: "In Stara Zagora, I hear the sounds of childhood," adding that these are "sounds of poetry, silence, and introspection."
Commenting on the railway station Valdobrev sang about in his song, Valchev said that construction of the station began on June 24, 1977, and was completed on June 16, 1982.
Valchev and Valdobrev recalled that the idea behind the Acoustics of Bulgaria initiative is to amplify the sound of places across the country that often go unnoticed by the people living near them.
"The major goal is for young people especially to understand that independence also means the opportunity to be alone in silence, without anyone imposing anything on you, and to freely hear the different kinds of noise," Valchev said. Valdobrev thanked the Bulgarian News Agency for their "genuine and meaningful partnership."
