Bulgaria and Azerbaijan on Wednesday signed an intergovernmental agreement for the construction and renovation of Shusha Park in Veliko Tarnovo, North Central Bulgaria, the Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev and the Chair of the State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture Anar Guliyev signed the agreement during a ceremony held at the Ministry of Interior. Veliko Tarnovo Mayor Daniel Panov signed as a representative of the local administration.

„This project, financed by Azerbaijan, and with the support of the Bulgarian government and the Veliko Tarnovo municipal authorities, is an expression of strategic partnership and the active dialogue between the two states, including a dialogue on a local level," Georgiev said. He outlined the importance of cultural and educational cooperation, based on shared traditional respect towards the history and the spiritual roots of the two nations.

The future park will be named after the Azerbaijan sister city and will contribute to the development of the urban environment and the recreational opportunities for both citizens and city guests. The initiative continues the partnership between Veliko Tarnovo municipality and the Heydar Aliev Foundation. In 2015-2016, the foundation contributed to restoration and conservation works in the Trapezitsa complex in Veliko Tarnovo.
