The New Vision International Group (NVIG) presents its conceptual object-posters at an exhibition entitled OBJECTively at the San Stefano Gallery in Sofia. The exhibition was unveiled on Wednesday and will be on until March 10.
The NVIG is comprised of Prof. Georgi Yankov, Dimitar Traychev, Lyuba Tomova, Milena Abanos, Nenko Atanasov, Nikolay Mladenov, Radoslava Boor and Strahil Dimitrov - Radin. The project, conceived by Yankov, was brought to life thanks to Tomova, who was the curator, and with the support of the director of the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in Berlin, Borislav Petranov.
Speaking at the exhibition's opening, Tomova urged those in attendance to speak with the posters. "I believe you have things to discuss," she added.
Albena Spasova from the International Triennial of Stage Poster said the OBJECTively exhibition confirms that all previous paradigms for the poster no longer apply. "A poster can be a paradox, a provocation, a tangible object, and much more. Here, you will encounter a wide range of themes - from subtle eroticism to pressing social issues and universal messages."
BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, who attended the opening, said that the National Academy of Art Rector, Prof. Georgi Yankov, has "filled the gallery with works that give us the opportunity to experience art independent of commissioned work or the fashions of the moment. It is now BTA's role to showcase and promote the pure art on display in this gallery".
He highlighted the close collaboration between BTA and the National Academy of Art (NAA). "In just a few days, we will unveil the latest issue of the LIK magazine, dedicated to the Academy's 130th anniversary. The magazine has taken on a new form, it now resembles a modern poster, thanks to the creativity of students and faculty from the Academy who worked on the redesigned cover and the magazine's refreshed overall look," Valchev said.
He also noted that, with the support of the NAA and Prof. Georgi Yankov himself, BTA now has a custom typeface designed specifically for the news agency, "giving us a unified and distinctive visual identity".
"Part of this unified visual identity, incidentally, is one of my personal favourite works by Prof. Yankov, which we have placed in the BTA Archive Hub, as we call BTA's information centre. The art installation, titled Your Audience, features metal faces whose eyes light up as you move past them. The idea is that if you want to have an audience, you must keep moving constantly, just as the artists whose posters are on display here have been doing for more than 20 years.
"The sadder aspect of the professor's idea is that, in the upper left corner, there is one face whose eyes never light up, no matter how much you move or jump, and I watch with great interest how people react when they encounter the work for the first time. This, too, is a valuable warning for all of us," Valchev explained.
